Vic; Loggers threaten legal action against protesters

MELBOURNE)

Logging workers may slap a civil lawsuit on environmental protesters blockading a logging
site south-west of Melbourne.

The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union says the workers in the Otway region
want $50,000 in compensation for work lost over the last two weeks because of the blockade.

Union spokeswoman JANE CALVERT says they've lost almost $500,000 over the last six
years due to blockades and demonstrations

She says the union will decide this week whether to take civil action.

Protesters from the Otway Ranges Environment Network positioned themselves on platforms
in trees earlier this month, and six were arrested when police moved in last week.

Network spokeswoman FIONA NELSON says the logging workers will have little success
getting compensation from protesters.

Ms NELSON says compensation should be demanded from the state government which authorised
the logging.
